Preparing for a Civil Traffic Hearing

Category: General Questions

Below is information to help you prepare for your Civil Traffic Hearing:

  • Please arrive before your scheduled hearing time
  • Check in using the touchscreen on the wall in the courtroom
  • Have your witnesses and evidence with you and ready to present to the judge

You and the officer are required to show each other any evidence being presented before the hearing starts.

  • Evidence must be either printed out or on a CD that the Court can keep
  • The Court cannot accept evidence on a USB flash drive, smartphone, laptop, or any other electronic device
  • If the officer has dashboard or body camera video, you will be able to view it before your hearing starts
  • The judge will decide if evidence presented is relevant and if it will be admitted as part of your case

At the hearing, the officer will explain why the citation was issued and present any witnesses and evidence  they have to the judge.

  • You will be able to ask the officer and witnesses questions about their testimony
  • Then it will be your turn to tell your side and to present any evidence or witnesses you have to the judge
  • After hearing from both sides, the judge will make a ruling of either responsible or not responsible

By requesting a hearing, you are giving up your right to attend Defensive Driving School to have an eligible charge dismissed.

If you need a continuance, a written Motion to Continue must be filed and received by the Court prior to the  hearing date.  Continuances cannot be requested by phone.  Motions to Continue are NOT automatically granted. You can write your own motion or print a copy from the Court’s website and fax or mail it to the Court.
